Description & Analysis

Produced for only four years from 1875-1878, the twenty cent piece is perhaps the oddest denomination in U.S. coinage history. The most common date of this type is the 1875-S, with a mintage of 1.1 million pieces. The Philadelphia Mint delivered only two business strike issues, the 1875 and the 1876. The latter date is infrequently offered in any grade, a fact that should come as no surprise given the paltry original mintage of 15,900 pieces.
