The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
Much underrated in comparison to its two famous proof-only predecessors, the 1877 is an issue of just 1,468 business strikes and a mere 20 proofs. True proofs of this date can be distinguished from deceptive, prooflike early strikings by a rust spot on Liberty's lower curls and, again, by the date being placed lower on the reverse.
