Description & Analysis

This is another rare issue for which proofs outnumber the currency pieces. The mintage in 1870 was the second lowest of the series, with worn examples being extremely rare. It's likely than the majority of the 3,000 pieces coined never left the Philadelphia Mint and were consigned to the melting pot after this type was abolished in 1873.

No varieties are known for this date, and it's very likely that the entire mintage was produced with a single pair of dies. As is normal for such low-mintage currency coins, the early pieces were made with prooflike surfaces and the later ones with satiny luster.
