Description & Analysis

This is another low-mintage issue that served little purpose in its own time. In all likelihood, many 1868 trimes remained in vaults when the order came to destroy all pieces in 1873.

Most survivors are Mint State or very close to it. Semi-prooflike fields or satiny luster are the norm for this date. The dies simply weren't run long enough to produce frosty luster, and this is true of all trimes 1863-72.
