Description & Analysis

This issue was a replay of 1863's coinage, with the exception that its mintage was little more than half that of the previous year. So rare are Mint State currency pieces of this date that for many years coin books and albums listed this as a proof-only date.

Most MS survivors are indeed prooflike but, because this is the norm for 1864, only the most brilliant ones are certified as PL. Worn examples are likewise very rare, and most collectors just complete their sets with the more available proofs.
