Description & Analysis

The mintage of trimes rose sharply in 1861, as uncertainty over the outcome of the Civil War and the value of the new federal paper money prompted some hoarding. This date is more common across all grades than other Type 3 trimes, though its values are comparable to those of several issues, since few collect this series by date.

The typical Mint State 1861 trime is also well struck and quite lustrous, and this had made it a good choice for type collectors. A minor repunched date variety is known, but only the most dedicated specialists seek it.
