Description & Analysis

1858 was the final year for this Type 2 design and also for Mint Director Snowden's practice of paying out silver coins for silver bullion. The Treasury Department put a stop to this activity and demanded that he follow the letter of the law by issuing fractional silver only in exchange for gold bullion.

The 1858 trime is the most often seen of the short-lived Type 2 series. Strike quality varies from poor to almost full, but clash marks remain a nearly constant distraction in finding a desirable specimen. Mint State pieces are scarce and gems quite rare.
