Description & Analysis

The dramatic rise in mintage, more than ten times the number coined in 1855, did not reflect any increase in demand. Instead it revealed Mint Director Snowden's illegal policy of paying out silver coins in exchange for silver bullion at above market prices. The law stipulated that only gold bullion was to be accepted in payment for fractional silver coins as a means of preventing their overproduction. In his eagerness to overcome the previous shortage of fractional silver coins, Snowden disregarded this order for the next several years.

1856 trimes are not as common as their high mintage would suggest, and gems are truly rare. The example illustrated displays a superior strike.
