Description & Analysis

The low mintage of this date reflects the drop in demand for three-cent pieces once half dimes through half dollars again became commonplace. It is scarce in all grades and genuinely rare in Mint State.

There are at least two repunched date varieties, but these are of limited interest. Most collectors seek this date only as a type coin.

The example illustrated is sharply struck, 1855 being among the few dates that are usually seen formally formed. It also displays very bold die-clashing on its reverse, a common occurrence on trimes, as the light weight and small size of their planchets led to frequent misfeeds.
