Description & Analysis

Another high mintage issue, the 1853 three-cent piece is common in all grades short of the gem (MS 65) level. Most have frosty luster and incomplete strikes as on the example shown, which also reveals heavy die erosion.

Several repunched dates are known, but these elicit little attention from anyone but series specialists.
