Description & Analysis

The ongoing crisis with the hoarding of silver half dimes through dollars prompted a huge production of this denomination in 1852, its first full year of minting. As the only silver piece not worth more than its face value, the "trime" circulated freely and partially met the demand for small change.

This date is quite common in worn condition, and even gem Mint State pieces are plentiful enough to provide for advanced collections. The real challenge is to find an example having a fully struck shield, as this design typically is quite uneven.

Several repunched date varieties are known, the most desirable of these being the very rare one in which numeral 1 was punched over an inverted 2. Also quite popular is a bold doubled-die reverse.
