Description & Analysis

The final year of three-cent production witnessed a modest mintage, of which many may have been melted without ever leaving the mint. This denomination was officially terminated September 25, 1890, the gold dollar and three-dollar piece being rendered obsolete by the same legislation.

The typical 1889 three-cent piece is well struck, though the example illustrated has some characteristic softness in the denticles and the lowest curls of Liberty's hair. Luster ranges from semi-prooflike to frostiness of fine grain.

A repunched date variety is known affecting numerals 89, but this had drawn little interest given the overall scarcity of this date.
