Description & Analysis

Production of the three-cent piece for circulation reached its nadir in 1885, a date for which all USA minor coins are either rare or, at least, more scarce than usual for their respective denominations. The three-cent piece leads the pack as being seldom seen except as a proof.

Since this series has traditionally been more popular in proof finish than as Mint State coins, the values for the rare business strikes are not nearly as high as they would be in the absence of proofs. The few certified MS 1885 coins found seem to be in higher grades than are typical for the common, early dates.
