Description & Analysis

Proof that the three-cent piece was obsolete in all respects but the law may be found in this year's miniscule mintage. The heavy wear seen on earlier dates suggests that coins of this type did continue to circulate for years afterward, but the need to produce additional pieces really ended in the mid-1870s.

With such a low mintage it's not surprising that no varieties are known. A single pair of dies could have produced the 4,000 pieces dated 1883, and the entire production probably represents less than a day's work at the press.

This date is quite scarce in all grades, with gems being very rare.
