Description & Analysis

After the odd spike in production during 1881, the minting of this denomination returned to its normal post-1876 level. In other words, this date had a very small mintage that was likely produced in a single day or two. It was the Mint's practice to coin a few thousand examples of denominations not needed for circulation simply to supply the demand from collectors of modest means and to suppress unwanted speculation in the proofs.

Most 1882 three-cent pieces were well made, with good overall strikes and nice luster. Some are semi-prooflike from the freshness of unworn dies. The only recurring flaw, one this date had in common with the five-cent piece, was the tendency of numeral 2 to become filled. The example illustrated is typical.

This date is rare in all grades, with the proofs being vastly more common.
