Description & Analysis

Just a token emission of three-cent pieces was produced this year, and it's doubtful that any of these coins were made in response to actual demand. By 1880 Americans were finding that they could manage quite well with the cent and nickel as their minor coins.

Most 1880 three-cent pieces known today are Mint State or very close to it. They are generally well struck and faintly prooflike. Circulated examples are quite rare, gems disproportionately available in relation to overall numbers.
