Description & Analysis

1875 was the year that witnessed the return of fractional silver coins to circulation, as their value finally equalized with that of paper money. This nearly destroyed the demand for three-cent pieces, and this date's mintage reflects the changing of the guard.

While examples of the 1875 three-cent piece are quite scarce in the higher circulated grades, both the number and quality of Mint State survivors are higher than one would expect. This is entirely unexplained.

Only one variety is known, but it's a good one: the flag of a duplicate numeral 1 is seen projecting from Liberty's neck.
