Description & Analysis

The mintage of this coin type continued its slow but steady slide in 1868. Examples of this date are common in worn condition, but Mint State pieces are relatively scarce, with gems being rare.

The coin illustrated reveals prominent die-clash impressions on both sides. The polished out leaves and ribbons suggest that the die was subsequent lapped to reduce the clash marks.

A very minor doubled-die reverse is illustrated in the book by Kevin Flynn and Edward Fletcher, along with an equally unexciting repunched date, but this issue is otherwise not noted for varieties.
