Description & Analysis

Production diminished just a bit from the previous year, this a response to the rapid retirement of three-cent fractional notes and the introduction in 1866 of a copper-nickel five-cent coin.

This date is noticeably more scarce in Mint State than the two earlier entries, as the novelty of Longacre's new coin had clearly worn off by 1867. Most example display so-so strikes, with weakness typically being seen on the lower curls of Liberty's hair and the Roman III. Frequent clashing of the dies and repolishing to remove these lines left the shallower features of the design partially effaced, as seen in the legend and some of the leaves on the specimen illustrated.

A minor doubled-die obverse variety is known, along with a few minor repunched dates, but this date is otherwise free of varieties.
