Description & Analysis

The production of this coin was heavy in 1866, though it fell far short of the previous year's record-holding mintage. Examples are fairly plentiful through MS 64, but true gems are much more scarce.

The usual problems associated with this coin type are often seen for 1866: clashed dies (photos), cracks and irregular striking. The alloy is also subject to toning streaks from incomplete mixing of the constituent metals.

Several varieties are known for this date, and the better ones are attributed by NGC under its VarietyPlus Service.
