Description & Analysis

The 1918-S quarter was a mass-produced issue with more than 11 million pieces struck. The economy in 1918 was booming and the need for minor coinage was great with all the mints running at full capacity. The result was a great many quarters were produced, but little attention was given to quality control. As a result, Full Head 1918-S quarters are one of the great strike rarities in the series. This situation is also seen in the Walking Liberty half and Mercury dime series, where the 1918-S is again a high mintage issue with a low availability of coins with strong striking definition. J.H. Cline estimates that 3% of the 1918-S quarters were struck with Full Head details. To us, this seems like a high estimation as that would represent some 330,000 coins. If that number is correct, then attrition took a disproportionate toll on these fully struck coins. Our guesstimate would be more on the order of .5% of the mintage.
