The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
Although often overshadowed by its S-mint counterpart, the 1918-D is a conditionally scarce issue that is infrequently encountered at the Gem level of preservation. Not only is complete head detail a virtually unobtainable goal, many Mint State survivors also display poor definition on Liberty's left (facing) leg, the date, and the eagle's breast feathers.
