Description & Analysis

After a five-year period during which only about 110,000 nickels were coined for circulation, this denomination came back with a vengeance in 1882. Some 11-1/2 million pieces were produced this year.

The 1882 Shield Nickel is readily available across a wide range of grades, and it is seen with both sharp strikes from fresh dies and poor strikes from worn, cracked dies. For many collectors this issue provides the coin for their type sets, but some care in selecting the right example is required.

A large mintage resulted in numerous varieties, mostly repunched dates. The numeral 2 is often found partly or completely filled from chipping of the die, the coin illustrated being an example. Such pieces are frequently and mistakenly submitted to NGC as 1883/2 overdates.
