Description & Analysis

Production of the nickel five-cent piece continued its slide during 1875, as the huge numbers minted in previous years were being reissued whenever fit to do so. Thus, coinage was limited to the number needed to replace those lost through normal attrition.

1875 nickels vary in strike and luster, but most are reasonably well made. The supply of Mint State examples is barely sufficient to meet the needs of advanced collectors.

Despite its relatively low mintage, this date still racked up a number of DDO varieties, as well as a smaller roster of RPDs.
