The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
Chief Engraver William Barber redesigned the reverse hub of the Seated Quarter in 1875. The Philadelphia Mint, however, did not immediately discard all of the dies sunk from the old reverse hub. At least one of these dies was in use as late as 1880, and it is identifiable by a cut over the left border of the reverse shield.
