The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
The federal government's desire to make its circulating coinage conform more closely to the metric system resulted in a weight increase for the Quarter from 6.22 grams to 6.25 grams. This change took place in 1873, and arrows were placed at the date in both that year and 1874 to serve as a marker for the general public. A total of 700 proofs were struck.
