The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
Briggs 2-B. This obverse die, which was used exclusively for proofs of this date, displays triple punching on the first digit in the date and light recutting inside the upper loop of the final 8. There is also a die break (as struck) on the scroll between the ER in LIBERTY, and a lump (also as produced) attached to the scroll at the bottom on the letter B. The latter two are curious features for a proof die, but, nonetheless, they make it easy for one to distinguish between proofs and business strikes of the 1868 Quarter.
