The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
The majority of 1877 halves, including the proofs, use a Type Two reverse (introduced in 1876) that has the lower bud on the olive branch closed. A scant 510 proof halves were struck of the 1877, and surprisingly few are known today in high grade.
