Description & Analysis

This oddity is not a regular part of the half dime series. Rather, it is a pattern coin that paired Anthony C. Paquet's 1859 Seated Liberty figure with the new reverse credited to James B. Longacre. Reportedly, just 100 pieces were coined, and it's likely that these were made for sale to collectors rather than for any practical need by the Mint. This die marriage is notable for its absence of a national identity.

These coins typically are poorly struck and slightly prooflike. Numerous planchet striations are also a common feature, and a deep die scratch from the left side of Liberty's base is a hallmark of this issue.
