Description & Analysis

The production of half dimes at the 1837 standard was abortive in 1853, as a law was passed in February that lowered this coin's weight about 7% to offset the rise in price of silver bullion. Many of the unreleased pieces on hand were subsequently melted, and circulated examples of the arrowless edition are scarce. The number of surviving Mint State coins is proportionally higher than normal, as these were hoarded for their bullion value until being rediscovered by collectors decades later.
