Description & Analysis

During the year, the Carson City Mint produced only 1,376 Silver Dollars, and those that were not exported or lost have survived today in well worn condition, with very few exceptions. The reason for such a low mintage, of course, was the rising silver price. In 1871, a freshly minted silver dollar contained more than face value in actual silver at the market levels of that time. It was an unfortunate situation for the famous Comstock Lode was beginning to produce silver at a greatly expanded pace.
