Description & Analysis

Despite its fairly generous mintage, the 1888 S dime is common only in worn condition. Examples at or close to Mint State are scarce and desirable.

The piece illustrated is exceptionally sharp and not at all typical of this issue. Most are weakly struck at Liberty's head and show a partially or fully filled mintmark.

Two repunched mintmark varieties are known, one also featuring a misplaced date numeral.
