Description & Analysis

The Mint Act of February 12, 1873 raised the weight of the fractional silver pieces very slightly to conform to Metric figures, but some 1-1/2 million dimes were produced at the Philadelphia Mint before this new standard went into effect. The overwhelming majority of these featured the first style of date used that year in which numeral 3 was nearly closed and resembled an 8 upon casual examination.

Despite a fairly generous mintage this issue is rather challenging to locate across all grades. Mint State pieces are scarce, but not truly rare. It's possible that a portion of the mintage was destroyed after the weight standard was revised early in the year, but there is no documentation of this.

Several date repunchings are known, but the only one of interest to non-series specialists is that having a fully repunched date, F-103/FS-301.
