Description & Analysis

1870 S dimes are very scarce across all grades, though the rarity of this issue at or near Mint State is less than for S-Mint dimes of the 1850s.

Six pair of dies were shipped to San Francisco in December, though only a single pair is known to have been used. In fact, none of the new reverses were used, as this date was struck with a die leftover from 1869's production. Walter Breen reports that all were struck in November of 1870.
