Description & Analysis

San Francisco alone coined dimes of the old style in 1860. Walter Breen reported that four obverse dies dated 1860 were shipped west on November 2, 1859. Since the transcontinental railroad was still 10 years away, these would have traversed the plains and mountains by horse-drawn express wagon. It's likely that this slow process accounts for the fact that dies of the new type having the national legend on the obverse were not received in time to prevent production with this obsolete design.

Despite its modest mintage the 1860 S dime is not a great rarity. Perhaps collectors recognized its distinctiveness early enough to preserve worn examples that were still circulating. Only in the higher circulated grades and in Mint State is this issue a rarity.

Two die pairs are known to have been used for 1860 S dimes, suggesting that production occurred in two batches separated by weeks or months. Both reverses were leftover from the shipment of 1858 and have the smaller size of S typical for 1858 S and 1859 S.
