Description & Analysis

The Small Date logotype was a radical departure from the Large Date also used for Philadelphia Mint dimes in 1856. This same punch was used for all New Orleans and San Francisco Mint dimes, and it is smaller than the punch used for all mints the next couple of years.

1856 Small Date dimes comprise the majority of this issue's mintage, and they are common across all circulated grades. Mint State pieces are more elusive, but even gems are available.

A nice doubled-die obverse variety is known, along with at least two each of misplaced dates and repunched dates. Two of these varieties are featured within Gerry Fortin's Top 100 and are attributed by NGC under its VarietyPlus Service.
