Description & Analysis

The first significant coinage of dimes at the New Orleans Mint occurred in 1839. Though scarcer than its Philadelphia Mint counterpart across all grades, the 1839 O dime is not rare in worn condition. Mint State pieces are quite elusive, and gems are genuinely rare. As a general rule, New Orleans Mint dimes are more likely to reveal isolated areas of striking weakness and die erosion that are those of the Philadelphia Mint, and this is true of the 1839 O issue.

Three different sizes of O mintmark were employed this year. The rarest is the Very Large O found on 1838 O dimes. In fact, this was the very same die used for the previous date. Slightly scarce is the Medium O mintmark, while that most often seen is the Large O (photos). One die featuring this mintmark has it boldly repunched (FS-501), and this date also includes four Top 100 varieties.
