The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
With a reported mintage of 17.5 million pieces, the 1922-S Peace dollar is a common issue in all grades. The typical example of the date leaves much to be desired aesthetically. Most specimens seen suffer from excessive bag marks, incomplete luster, and weak strikes. Q. David Bowers asserts, 'All of the problems that beset the usual coin can be turned into an advantage for the careful buyer.' Bowers notes some exceptional coins do exist, and they provide extraordinary value for the collector who is patient enough to seek them out.
