Description & Analysis

Judd-140, Pollock-167, Low R.7.

The simple obverse design consists of the legend USA above and 1852 below. The reverse features a circle of olive sprigs. Struck on an annular copper-nickel planchet with a plain edge. One of the more innovative proposed solutions to the problem of the small and easily lost gold dollar, though a thinner and expanded coin was chosen in the end.
