Description & Analysis

Judd-79A, Pollock-86, Low R.7.

Design. Medallic orientation. The obverse has the Seated Liberty design, close to that adopted for circulation strikes. This is Judd's "straight date," which has LIBERTY incused on the shield. The reverse shows Gobrecht's Flying Eagle design, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA on the upper rim and HALF DOLLAR at the lower margin. Struck in silver with a reeded edge.

Commentary. According to there are no restrikes of this issue, only originals, which were struck in 1838: "No light weight restrikes have ever been confirmed." About a dozen pieces are known.
