The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
Business strike 1884 eagles are scarce and underrated, but the rarity of proofs from this year is quite another matter. Only 45 proofs were struck and for some unknown reason many, if not most, were melted. Today proofs are of the highest order of rarity with Akers estimating only 7-8 survivors. The date is so elusive that it was missing from many of the major gold collections assembled in the past century. It was lacking from the extensive runs of dated gold assembled by Garrett, Eliasberg, Carter, and King Farouk.
