The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
A mere 48 proofs were struck in 1882, and of that number it is estimated that probably fewer than 20 are known today. The Garrett-Guth reference states, 'Of these, at least three are in the museum collections of the Smithsonian Institution and the American Numismatic Society.' Dealers and collectors recognize the rarity of this date as a proof and have been willing to pay the premium it commands.
