The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
According to Wayne Miller's book on the Morgan and Peace dollar series, proofs from 1903 usually display bright, multicolored toning. He speculates this may have occurred from the packaging the coins were shipped in from the Mint. The envelopes may have had a high sulphur content which resulted in the iridescent colorations.
Proof dollars from 1903 were struck in the no-contrast method of proofing that began in earnest in the Mint in 1902.
