The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
A new reverse hub for the Morgan dollar design was put into use in 1900. In A Guide Book of Morgan Silver Dollars, Dave Bowers writes: 'Coins made from dies made from this hub have less definition to the eagle's breast feathers, introducing another aspect into grading techniques.' It is obviously impossible to grade any coin without knowing what was there to start with.
