The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
With a mintage of more than 12 million coins, the 1899-O is another extremely common date, although before the Treasury release it was considered a rarity. Striking quality varies from poor to exceptional, as Wayne Miller explains: 'Strike varies considerably from very flat to fully struck. This is to be expected for a high-mintage issue, since New Orleans struck approximately 150,000 coins per working die. Those struck near the end of the life of the dies would of course suffer considerable loss of detail.'
