The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
Several O/S varieties are known, and Breen commented: 'Those with less of the S visible at O command smaller premiums or will price as preceding,' referring to the normal 1882-O variety. In 2005, Dave Bowers wrote: Be sure to buy one with the overmintmark distinct under a good 4x glass.' Bowers (1993) speculates that hundreds of thousands of the 6 million Silver Dollars produced at the New Orleans Mint in 1882 are of the O/S variety. Since this variety is plentiful in circulated grades, this estimate seems reasonable. Uncirculated examples are another matter entirely, and Bowers states: 'The 1882-O/S is very scarce in lower Mint State grades, scarcest in MS64, and very rare in MS65.' In 2005, he estimated a field population of 4,300 to 7,500 Mint State examples still exist today, commenting that the original mintage and distribution of this issue are not known.
