The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
The extreme pressure that the Bland-Allison Act placed upon the Mint is evident in the haste with which the first Morgan dollars dies were prepared. While the details of Morgan's design were being finalized, several dies were overpunched with the new 7 tail feathers hub. The coins that the Philadelphia Mint struck from these dies have been among the most widely sought examples in this popular series.
