Description & Analysis

Collective feelings of guilt among Americans at having done so little to honor veterans of the unpopular Vietnam War seems to have prompted a lot of soul searching and belated recognition during the 1980s and ‘90s. Among the resulting tributes was the establishment of a memorial at Arlington National Cemetery to honor America’s female veterans of military service who served throughout the nation’s history. This took the form of a classical arcade structure near the cemetery’s entrance, and funding for this memorial came in part from surcharges included within the prices of silver dollars minted and sold during 1994. Groundbreaking for the memorial occurred the following June, and its formal dedication took place October 18, 1997.

U. S. Mint Sculptor-Engraver T. James Ferrell designed and modeled this silver dollar, and his initials are seen near the obverse border at seven o’clock. This side features conjoined busts of five women facing left, each representing a different branch of the U. S. Military. Beneath these busts is the date of coining, along with the usual statutory mottoes. Arranged in an arc around the obverse periphery are the five military branches embodied by the female busts: “ARMY  MARINES  NAVY  AIR FORCE  COAST GUARD.”

The reverse of this coin is dominated by a perspective view of the memorial structure. Above it is the inscription “WOMEN IN MILITARY SERVICE MEMORIAL.” The coin’s mintmark appears to the left of the memorial near the border, and statutory legends comprise the balance of this side.

As with all of this year’s military-themed commemorative silver dollars, the uncirculated issue was produced at West Point, while the Philadelphia Mint struck the proof edition. Sales for each of these three commemoratives were nearly identical, with proofs outselling uncirculated pieces by a factor of four, and overall sales being quite disappointing to both the Mint and the sponsoring organizations. Time has healed these wounds, as the relatively low mintages of the 1994 silver dollars makes them quite appealing to today’s collectors.
