Description & Analysis

Approval for a coin honoring the United States Executive Mansion, better known as the White House, was late in coming. It was not until May 13, 1992 that Congress passed a bill which called for the coining of not more than 500,000 silver dollars to mark the laying of this structure’s cornerstone on October 13, 1792. First occupied by the President of the United States of America in 1800, the original building was designed by architect James Hoban. Burned out by the British Army in 1814, only the walls remained, but the White House was restored immediately, and extending wings were added to it in later generations.

There was controversy surrounding the obverse of this silver dollar. As originally designed by U. S. Mint Sculptor-Engraver John Mercanti, this side included an excerpt from the prayer by the White House’s first occupant, John Adams, that “May none but honest and wise men ever rule under this roof . . .” This innocent exclusion of a possible female president, entirely understandable in 1800, ran afoul of political correctness in 1992, and this inscription was dropped. Ultimately, the obverse of the White House Silver Dollar was completed by fellow Mint staffer Edgar Z. Steever, IV. Shown is the north elevation of the White House with the bicentennial dates above it and the inscription “THE WHITE HOUSE” above these. Steever’s initials are below the structure at left, while the mintmark (‘D’ for uncirculated coins, ‘W’ for proofs) appears near the border at the four o’clock position.

The reverse of this silver dollar portrays architect Hoban before the front entrance of the White House, his name placed below his waist-up figure. The initials of U. S. Mint Sculptor-Engraver Chester Y. Martin appear on Hoban’s sleeve, while the remaining inscriptions on this side and the obverse are all statutory in nature.

Despite a nationwide recession and a flurry of commemorative programs during 1992, this issue was a rare sellout. Its relatively low maximum mintage added to the appeal of this coin among speculators, and for a time dealers had difficulty filling orders in the aftermarket.
