The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
The 1928-D dime is common only in lower grades. Very Fine and Extremely Fine specimens are somewhat scarce, and About Uncirculated and lower Mint State coins are seldom encountered. Near-Gem and finer pieces are elusive, with or without Full Bands. Additionally, David Lange (2005) writes: 'More of a problem than incomplete bands ... is a particular susceptibility to flatness in the legends. This phenomenon appears with nearly all dates in this series, but 1928-D rarely appears without it.'
